A major project in the northbound lanes of I-235 starts on Tuesday

OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) –  “Be prepared for significant delays. Be prepared for major backups,” said Bryce Boyer with the Oklahoma Department of Transportation. “Whether you’re trying to travel on I-235 or not, you’re probably going to see some delays from it.”

The project zeros in on the Dallas Junction. Crews spent the last month and a half working on the southbound lanes of I-235. On Tuesday they’re starting construction in the northbound lanes.

“We are anticipating the northbound I-235 project to have a bigger impact on traffic,” said Boyer.

Crews will be doing rehabilitation work to the bridge’s joints.

“There’s nothing wrong with the bridges but if we can rehabilitate them and extend their life cycle that’s obviously something we want to do,” said Boyer.

ODOT says from 8 p.m. Tuesday through 6 a.m. Wednesday:

  • Northbound I-35/I-235 will be narrowed to two lanes between S.E. 15TH St. and Lincoln Blvd.

  • The northbound I-235 off ramp to westbound I-40 will be closed

  • The westbound I-40 off-ramp to northbound I-235 will be closed

  • The eastbound I-40 off-ramp to northbound I-235 will be closed

  • The northbound I-235 off-ramp to Oklahoma City Blvd. will be closed

Then, starting at 6 a.m. on Wednesday:

  • Northbound I-235 will be narrowed to two lanes

  • The westbound I-40 ramp to northbound I-235 will not have a merge area – and will likely be backed up

  • The northbound I-235 off-ramp to Sheridan Ave. will be open but will have intermittent closures

  • The northbound I-235 off-ramp to Lincoln Blvd. will not be impacted

“We’re asking you to try to find an alternate route,” said Boyer. “[If not,] drivers just need to make sure they’re planning a lot of extra travel time and they’re packing their patience if they have to be in the area.”

Boyer said the project is expected to go through July.
