Maine Senate gives first nod to GMO food labels
Maine lawmakers push forward proposal requiring labeling of genetically modified food
AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) -- A bill that would require Maine food retailers to put special labels on products that contain genetically modified ingredients is moving forward in the Legislature.
The Democratic-led state Senate gave initial approval to the bill on Wednesday. It faces further votes in the House and Senate.
The bill wouldn't go into effect four other states pass similar laws.
Supporters for labeling the products say genetically modified foods pose health risks. But the Maine Grocers Association says genetically modified foods are safe and that the labeling will be costly and burdensome for grocers and farmers.
Other states are debating similar measures. Connecticut recently passed a bill requiring the labeling of genetically modified food products, but only after neighboring states put similar laws in place.
