As Madonna Turns 60, What Her Early Life in New York City Was Like

Before Madonna became famous, she was living in a tiny New York City apartment.

The singer, who turns 60 Thursday, moved from Michigan to New York City in 1977 when she was 19 with little more than a dollar and a dream.

She performed inside New York City downtown clubs like Danceteria, The Pyramid Club and Fun House while living in the East Village. During this time, she was in the mix with the tastemakers of the era like Andy Warhol and the Beastie Boys, and she dated artist Jean-Michel Basquiat.

Inside Edition got a look inside Madonna's first Manhattan apartment, which has been renovated since she lived there.

The fifth-floor walk-up in the East Village features two bedrooms, a tiny bathroom and a modest kitchen.

Madonna once toured the apartment for a VH1 special in 1998.

She stayed in the apartment until she signed her contract with Sire/Warner Bros. in 1983. After the release of her debut single, “Everybody,” the singer moved out and lived in a SoHo loft, giving her East Village apartment to her brother, Christopher.

These days, Madonna calls Lisbon, Portugal, her home, and she often posts videos to Instagram from around the city.

Prior to living in the East Village, Madonna lived in a spare bedroom in an apartment on the Upper West Side, where she spent much of her first year in the city.
