Madonna cried a lot on tour

Los Angeles - Madonna was an emotional ''mess'' during her tour last year.

While the 54-year-old star loves performing for fans all over the world, she admits her MDNA tour took a toll on her and she regularly burst into tears due to exhaustion but believes it helped her to put on better shows.

The mother-of-four told the New York Post's Page Six at a screening of her new concert film, The MDNA Tour: ''I was a mess. I would have my bad nights, and I would cry and I would say I don't want to do this. Before every show, everyone came into my dressing room and . . . said prayers, and 50% of the time I said them, and 49% of the time I was crying, usually from over-exhaustion. But there's something about pushing yourself.''

Madonna wrapped up the tour in late December in Cordoba, Argentina, after performing 88 sold out shows in front of 2.2 million fans worldwide.

The tour, which grossed over $305m and was named the highest grossing tour of 2012, proved controversial, with Madonna baring her buttocks to raise money for victims of Hurricane Sandy at one date and writing a message of support for US President Barack Obama on her back at another.

The Girl Gone Wild hitmaker was honoured with the 'Top Touring Artist' award at the 2013 Billboard Music Awards last month.
