Machines seized, 9 arrested in gambling raid at AR stores

CRITTENDEN COUNTY, ARK. — Crittenden County deputies raided two businesses in Earle, Arkansas, and arrested nine people including a Memphis teen on charges related to illegal gambling.

The raids were carried out at 7:20 Wednesday evening at Stein’s Grocery and Market on Arkansas Street and the Valero station on Highway 64 in Earle, the Crittenden County Sheriff’s Office said in a release. Both stores are operated by the same person, they said.

Authorities say they seized 14 illegal gambling machines, plus more than $9,000, two firearms and marijuana.

They say the investigation into the businesses began several months ago when they received complaints about illegal gambling machines at the stores.

Mohamed Ali Ismail, 41, of Earle, owner of Steins and manager of the Valero station, was charged with two felony counts of keeping a gambling house.

Four employees and four customers including 18-year-old Saad B Ghaled and 44-year-old Charles Townsend of Memphis were charged with other offenses.
