Machete-wielding man shot in road rage incident on Staten Island: sources

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. (PIX11) — A gunman shot a machete-wielding man in the chest during an apparent road rage incident on Staten Island Wednesday morning, police and law enforcement sources said.

The machete holder, 45, confronted the man near Vineland and Grantwood avenues at around 9:30 a.m., according to the NYPD. The man, 50, then shot the machete holder in the chest, sending him to the hospital in critical condition, police said.

The shooter remained at the scene and charges were pending, police said. The incident drew a large police response.

Authorities believe the two men were involved in a road rage incident that sparked the violent encounter, according to police sources.

Witnesses said the driver of an SUV hopped out and was armed with a machete that he allegedly used to smash a red SUV’s passenger side window.

The red SUV driver got out, armed with a gun, and shot the machete-wielding man once in the chest, according to witnesses.

“I heard somebody scream, so I looked out the window, and then I saw a man lying in the street and another guy standing over him with a firearm in his hand,” said Dean, a Staten Island resident.

Dean said he is grateful no one else was hurt.

“I think it’s terrible, scary,” Dean said. “I was coming out, my daughter’s ready to go to school. They miss, they’re not too accurate with their shooting, and an innocent bystanders can get hit. There’s got to be consequences for actions like this.”
