Happy 85th Birthday, Social Security
Back on Aug. 14, 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act into law. On Jan. 1, 1937, Social Security's payroll tax kicked in, which got the ball rolling on revenue collection in preparation for eventually paying out benefits. The Social Security program you see before you today has changed pretty dramatically from its early days.
