Electric startup Rivian has won the race to put the first electric pickup into customer hands. “After months of building pre-production vehicles, this morning our first customer vehicle drove off our production line,” founder and CEO RJ Scaringe tweeted Sept. 14. The first Rivian built for a customer was an R1T pickup in Rivian Blue, driven off the production line surrounded by cheering and masked workers at the company’s plant in Normal, Illinois.

For a little over a year, Ram has been investigating an issue with a number of heavy duty trucks from the 2021 model year that have experienced engine bay fires. For some reason, even when the engine is off, the solid-state intake heater relay in Ram trucks fitted with the 6.7-liter Cummins turbodiesel can suffer a short and catch fire. In May, Ram discovered the issue occurring even in trucks with protected relays.
Rumors of an electrified powertrain for the next-generation Mustang are swirling yet again after a former Ford engineer reportedly leaked his involvement in hybrid powertrain development for the pony car's forthcoming redesign, further bolstering expectations for more electrified models. An eagled-eyed member of the Mustang7G.com forums spotted an engineer who reportedly listed experience working on two separate powertrains marked as hybrids — one based on the 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder found in the base car and EcoBoost high performance models, along with one based on what appears to be a variant of the Coyote V8. While Ford has not yet paired a V8 with an electric motor in any production offerings, a pony car would certainly be a good fit for such a treatment.

When Ford told us in September that the 2022 Maverick Hybrid pickup wasn't delayed due to the chip shortage, and that it would be available at launch, the automaker was being half true. Ford Authority says some of those reservation holders will get something concrete whenever they do get their trucks. Citing a letter from Ford to buyers, the automaker will give them a few accessories that slot into the Ford Integrated Tether System, or FITS for short.

Tesla shares surged as much as 14.9% to $1,045.02, making it the world's most valuable automaker according to Reuters calculations based on its latest filing. Even Tesla Chief Executive Elon Musk expressed surprise at the velocity of the surge.
