Coaching Direct Reports Off Your Team and Toward Their Goals

Confession: Coaching people off my team is one of my favorite parts about management. Whether your company has a clearly defined employee life-cycle plan, a survival-of-the-fittest mentality, or something in between, managers hold tremendous power as it relates to the success and happiness of employees. The intention of coaching is not to push low performers to other teams or out of the company, and ushering people to the door no better than when you received them is not coaching.
