Viewpoint: Diversity is the surprise winner of the 2022 midterms

Voters chose the first two out lesbians ever to be elected governor of a U.S. state, the first out transgender man to win a state legislative race and the first out immigrant ever elected to Congress. Here in California, eight openly LGBTQ+ candidates won races to serve in Sacramento, putting our state legislature on track to become the first in U.S. history to achieve proportional representation for the LGBTQ+ community. Nationally, voters elected the first black governor of Maryland, the first Native American senator from Oklahoma in nearly a century, and the first Gen Z member of Congress, who is Afro-Latino.
