Apple's car project has a new boss, report says

Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL)'s secret self-driving electric car project has a new high-profile leader, The Wall Street Journal said Monday.

Senior managers on the tech giant's car venture, Project Titan, now report to Bob Mansfield, people familiar with the matter told the publication. Mansfield has been an advisor on special projects who worked on the Apple Watch, and was a top Apple executive under former CEO Steve Jobs, the Journal report said.

Apple declined to comment to CNBC, and has never publicly said it is working on a car.

Mansfield's leadership would come after another Apple veteran, Steve Zadesky, left the project, the Journal reported earlier this year. At that time, the Journal said that Apple's automobile team had encountered some problems attaining ambitious goals for the project.

Recent coverage from technology site The Information suggested that the timeline on the car has been pushed back.
