Luzerne County voting machines put to test ahead of primary

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Luzerne County began testing its electronic voting machines ahead of the April 23 Primary Elections.

28/22 News Reporter Jason LiVecchi has more from Your Local Election Headquarters.

In a large warehouse in Wilkes Barre Monday, the machines were powered on and put through a rigorous test ahead of the April primary.

“This is how we make sure that all of the equipment is adequately prepared for election day,” said Luzerne County Election Bureau Executive Director Emily Cook.

Over 700 electronic voting booths will be in use throughout the county at the different precincts on Election Day.

Homeless camp cleanup continues as concerns arise

“There are 186 precincts, one of them is split between Congressional District 8, and Congressional District 9, so we have 187 for this election,” Cook explained.

“It was nice to see, but it happened very fast so for me, it would have to be broken down more,” said Luzerne County resident Desiree Edwards.

The presentation was open to the public, and there were some interesting questions asked during the demonstration of the electronic voting machines.

“I was also glad to hear, you know, quelling some of the concerns that people have about infiltration of the machines and that they aren’t connected to the Internet at any time, everything is all done in a secure fashion,” said Luzerne County Council Member John Lombardo.

One issue of concern is seeing all of the candidates’ names, the election bureau reminds people casting a vote to scroll down using a touchscreen button to see all the candidates. One person suggested a more noticeable button that blinks to make the process easier

“There are 17 candidates running for government commissioner, so make sure that you are scrolling down when you get to that contest It will take about two weeks to test all the machines for the county,” Cook continued.
