Lumber yard fire shuts down railroad in Kansas City, Missouri

KANSAS CITY, Mo — The Kansas City Fire Department responded to a fire at a commercial office building in a lumber yard on Saturday night.

In a press release from KCFD, heavy smoke and fire were reported at the 3900 block of 14th Terrace in Kansas City, Missouri — a few blocks East of Interstate 70 and almost a mile south of Independence Avenue.

The fire had escalated, upon their arrival, and prevented crews from entering the office building. However, they were able to protect the surrounding stacks of lumber and rail cars from catching fire, according to a press release.

Crews said there was minimal damage to the surrounding lumber after they were able to contain the fire to the main building.

KCFD, out of precaution, requested the main line of the railway be shut down for a short period of time, the release said.
