Lufkin ISD board names superintendent finalist

LUFKIN, Texas (KETK) – The Lufkin Board of Trustees announced on Monday that they have named Dr. James Hockenberry as their lone finalist to become the new superintendent.

Hockenberry has been the Longview ISD Assistant Superintendent for District Services since 2020 and spent 14 years as a superintendent in Center ISD and Chireno ISD.

“The board considered 43 applications, community input, two layers of interviews and reference and background checks in our extensive search for our next superintendent,” Kristi Gay, Lufkin ISD board president, said. “Dr. James Hockenberry is the Board’s unanimous choice to fill this position. He has extensive experience and knowledge in all aspects of leading school districts, as well as good communication skills. We look forward to working with Dr. Hockenberry.”

Hockenberry has a Bachelor of Science, Master of Education and Doctorate of Education from Stephen F. Austin University.

“Lufkin ISD is considered the premier school district in East Texas,” Hockenberry said. “I appreciate the board’s trust in me for the opportunity to serve the students, staff and community of Lufkin. My wife and I are eager to experience and witness the remarkable pride displayed here. I look forward to working with all stakeholders to establish further the school system they desire, which is in students’ best interest as they prepare for their future.”

Hockenberry and his wife, Mary, have been married for 26 years and have two adult children.

Lufkin ISD said that Hockenberry will be named as the new superintendent after a state-required 21 day waiting period ends.
