Lucy Letby has been denied permission to appeal against her convictions for the murder and attempted murder of babies in her care.

In a short Court of Appeal hearing in London on Friday, May 24, the three judges reviewing Letby’s application — Dame Victoria Sharp, Lord Justice Holroyde and Mrs Justice Lambert — denied her permission to appeal, according to BBC News, The Telegraph and Evening Standard.

The former neonatal nurse was found guilty of killing seven infants — five boys and two girls — and attempting to murder six others at the Countess of Chester Hospital in 2015 and 2016 in a trial that lasted 10 months and ended in August 2023.

The 34-year-old was sentenced to life by Judge Justice Goss just days after she was found guilty.

According to BBC News, Letby applied for leave to appeal against her convictions shortly after her trial ended.

In January, she lost the first stage of the process where a single judge reviewed her arguments, per U.K. newspaper The Times.

Letby was entitled to a second attempt and the hearing on May 24 reflected the outcome of the second stage where a panel of judges reviewed her application, per The Guardian.

Letby’s lawyer put forward four grounds of appeal to challenge her convictions, arguing that the judge at her trial wrongly refused legal applications made during the case.

The former healthcare professional is also due to be re-tried on one charge of attempted murder in June. The jury at her 2023 trial at Manchester Crown Court was unable to reach a decision on the charge.
