LSU partners with Red Cross for hurricane season disaster training

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – As meteorologists are becoming more concerned about what could be an active hurricane season this year, LSU is partnering with the Red Cross for a free disaster training camp.

“Here in Louisiana, we know that it’s not about if a storm will happen, but when a storm will happen. And the more hands we have on deck, the more people we have prepared, the more resilient our communities will be,” said Micah Nicholas, Executive Director of Capital West Chapter for the Red Cross.

La Niña watch is officially on: How will Louisiana weather be impacted in 2024?

The first-ever three-day intensive Red Cross training camp kicked off in Baton Rouge Friday evening.

“We’re doing a lot of training around, setting up shelters, logistics, feeding the type of things that people don’t think about until they need it,” said Nicholas.

This event is part of a senior project for the Manship School of Communication students. Gabriel Guillory, a senior at LSU, says he’s the captain for this PR campaign.

“It’s amazing. It’s great to see all your hard work pay off in the end. You know, when doing the work, it’s really hard and struggling, at some point, it’s hard to see the light in the tunnel,” said Guillory.

The purpose is to train at least 100 volunteers. The goal is to provide them with the knowledge, hands-on preparation and certifications needed to serve their communities after a natural disaster.

“This is a great partnership because the younger we can get people involved, the better,” said Nicholas.

Hurricane season starts on June 1. The Red Cross is always looking for volunteers. To learn more about the organization’s initiatives visit their website.
