LSU leaders, councilmembers plan for a new sports and entertainment arena

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — Plans for a new LSU entertainment center and sports center have been proposed to metro council members.

“This will be a game-changer,” said Councilwoman Carolyn Coleman, District 10. “This will make us a better Baton Rouge. I’m talking about economic development. I’m talking about education.”

Council members have proposed several locations. Memorial Park in North Baton Rouge by Memorial Stadium, the River Center downtown, and an area on the campus of LSU.

“I want to see all three of those projects happen in a way that improves the divested community, protects the city’s assets and enhances our opportunity to attract larger entertainment experiences to the people who live here in Baton Rouge,” said Mayor Pro Temp LaMont Cole.

Conventions, Sports & Leisure International (CSL) conducted a recent study and found that the Raising Cane’s River Center capacity for concerts is 7,200, which is far lower than the median capacity of 9,400.

CSL said any potential renovations to the Raising Cane’s River Center could range between 80 to 95 million dollars.

“This is not something the city is paying for there will be no taxes raised to do this,” said Coleman.

“I do think we have a superior opportunity to advance entertainment in our town while protecting the city and our assets,” Cole said.
