LSU Health New Orleans’ Camp Tiger brings roaring fun to children with disabilities
NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — The LSU Health Sciences Center in New Orleans is gearing up for a summer camp filled with fun for children and teens with disabilities.
Camp Tiger is a free camp that gives these children priceless experiences.

15-year-old Finn Foret is one happy camper.
“Camp Tiger is very fun,” he said.
His mother, Kimberlee Owens, said he’s been going to Camp Tiger for eight years.
“Finn talks about Camp Tiger the entire year. He always talks about all the places he’ll go,” said Owens.
First-year medical students at LSU’s Health Sciences Center put on Camp Tiger for children and teens with disabilities, where they take them on field trips every day for a full week, and it’s all free fun.
“We take kids to several places throughout New Orleans like Audubon Zoo, the Children’s Museum, Global Wildlife Center, aquarium, the insectarium and more,” said Director of Camp Tiger Michael Barkmeyer.
Foret loves the animals the most.
“Lions, tigers, penguins, flamingos, monkeys,” he said.
Barkmeyer said LSU Health has been putting on the program for 36 years, and benefits both the campers and the medical students.
“Students learn patience and empathy. They can interact with a special group of patients with special needs,” he said.
Last year, there were 55 campers, and this year they are hoping for 75 campers. You can count on Finn being there once again.
“I’m grateful it doesn’t cost anything. I’m grateful for everyone involved, and how kind and generous they are to the kids,” said Owens.
An auction and benefit to help support Camp Tiger will be held Friday, March 8, at Club XLIV in Champions Square.
