Loved Ones Bid Final Farewell To Marlins Pitcher José Fernández

On Thursday (Sept. 29), the Marlins star pitcher—born in Cuba—was mourned by friends and family, and tenderly remembered as larger-than-life. Nearly 200 members of the Miami Marlins organization gathered at St. Brendan Catholic Church with José Fernández’s closest family and friends, according to People.

Fernández left behind a girlfriend, Maria Arias, who is also expecting their daughter. Scott Boras, the beloved player’s agent, addressed spoke movingly about his client’s love of his country, family and baby-to-be, whom Fernández named before his untimely death.

“When he found out he was going to be a father he wanted to know: ‘Am I going to be a good father?’ and I told him, ‘You’re going to be a great father,” said Boras, “because you’re going to treat your child like your mother treated you. And you’ll know exactly what to do.’ The next day he bought a glove and put Penelope on it for his unborn daughter.”

Fernández was killed in a boating accident in Miami Sunday (Sept. 25), in what officials say was a speed-related accident. May he rest in peace.
