“Love Triangle” murder trial heats up; jury sees heated exchange between suspect and victim

GENEVA COUNTY, Ala. (WDHN) — A jury in Geneva County got to see dash camera footage from a vehicle that will possibly help them determine if a man shot another man intentionally or out of self-defense.

Jason Kersey is charged with shooting and killing Tony Dean at Kersey’s home outside of Samson last January.

Authorities have called this case a “love triangle” and say Dean was driving there to see his estranged girlfriend, Penny Carnley, whom Kersey had been seeing.

On Tuesday, January 30 prosecutors showed the jury footage of Dean and his nephew driving to Kersey’s property just outside of Samson and in that footage, Dean mentioned that he wanted to beat up Kersey then once they got to the home.

At the property, the jury could hear the heated exchange between Kersey and Dean, where then gunfire rang out. After the first shot, his nephew said he yelled at Dean to get back in the truck and that this situation was not worth dying over. The nephew says Dean was about to get back in the truck when the second shot was fired, which hit Dean in the neck killing him minutes later.

Dean’s nephew told the jury on Tuesday, January 30, that his uncle probably got high before going to Kersey’s, but wanted to go and get money from Carnley that was owed to him.

Prosecutors are trying to prove that Kersey wanted to kill Dean and in the video, they tried to point out to the jury that Kersey can be seen walking towards the truck with the gun.

Kersey’s attorney feels that his client was protecting himself because if he didn’t then Dean would try to beat him up. The Defense even showed the jury multiple knives and several baseball bats in Dean’s truck that they believed were going to be used if the fight escalated.

The trial will pick back up Wednesday, January 31, from the Geneva County Courthouse, where both sides in the case feel that this case could wrap up either late Wednesday or sometime on Thursday.
