Louisville teacher charged with child abuse, placed on administrative leave

DENVER (KDVR) — A Boulder Valley School District teacher was placed on paid administrative leave after an “incident with a student” that led to a criminal charge.

Monarch PK-8 teacher Matt Hill, 43, was charged with child abuse that knowingly/recklessly caused injury other than serious bodily injury stemming from an incident on April 8, according to court documents. Hill has been with the district since October 2013, the district said.

In a letter to parents, Monarch Principal Robin Techmanski said the district “immediately took action” by notifying police and placing Hill on administrative leave.

According to court documents, Hill appeared in court on April 10 and was given a $1,000 personal recognizance bond, on which he was released. Hill was no longer listed on the school’s staff directory as of 2 p.m. on April 11.

District leadership said the information was shared because the school and district’s top priorities include safety and transparency.

“We can share no further information at this time because it is an ongoing police investigation and personnel matter,” Techmanski wrote to the school’s families. “We believe in due process and appreciate your patience and understanding as this work continues.”

Anyone with information to share with investigators can contact Louisville Police Officer Jewel Danielson at jdanielson@louisvilleco.gov. Techmanski also asked parents and guardians to let staff know of any students who need support for the matter.
