BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — A Louisiana rapper will stay in federal custody at least until his next court date. NBA YoungBoy, whose real name is Kentrell Gaulden, is accused of being in a prescription drug fraud ring.

According to court documents, Gaulden is accused of operating a large-scale drug prescription fraud ring in Cache County in Utah. He was arrested on Tuesday, April 16.

Gaulden faces 46 charges in Utah, including patterns of unlawful activity, unlawful conduct-pharmacy practices, identity fraud and forgery.

U.S. Judge Shelly Dick, who hears cases in the middle district of Louisiana, revoked his pre-trial release on an unrelated federal gun charge, and he was taken into federal custody.

A hearing was set for Monday, April 29, in the Utah drug case. However, two of Gaulden’s lawyers asked that his preliminary and detention hearing be rescheduled. That was moved to 9 a.m. Thursday, May 9.

Status of the Louisiana case

In March, a Louisiana federal judge paused an ongoing case. According to court documents, Gaulden was accused of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of a firearm not registered in the national firearms registration in an indictment in March 2021.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office agreed to drop the firearm registration charge, and it was dismissed with prejudice in March 2024.

Dick said in a Monday, March 11, order that she will not decide on the gun possession charge until the Supreme Court rules in the United States v. Rahimi case, which will determine how these charges should be determined.

The next hearing in this case is set for July.
