Improvements to preschool, elementary and high school education in Louisiana have not gone unnoticed, yet the the state still finds itself among the lowest-ranked in the country.

Louisiana was ranked 40th on U.S. News & World Report’s list of the best states for pre-K through 12th-grade education, up from 41st last year. It’s the highest Louisiana has ever been on his list.

In a news release, state Education Superintendent Cade Brumley attributed the achievement to the hard work of teachers and students.

The release also highlights efforts made on the state level to improve education. In recent years, the Louisiana Legislature has approved several bills to change how students are taught, including a greater focus on math and reading.

In 2023, Louisiana jumped up five places on the U.S. News & World Report list.

Its rankings for pre-K-12 education are based on several categories, including college readiness, graduation rates, preschool enrollment and National Assessment of Educational Progress scores. Recently, Louisiana was recognized as one of three states to reach pre-pandemic reading levels on the NAEP test.

The pre-K-12 rankings factor into the publication’s “Best States” list, in which Louisiana placed 50th.
