Louisiana Department of Insurance: What to know about filing a claim after storms cause damage

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — Severe weather made its way through the Baton Rouge area on Monday, May 13.

This caused some schools to be closed on Tuesday, May 14 and knocked out power to thousands of customers in the state.

Three people were killed after those storms went through the state, according to the Louisiana Department of Health.

For those that were affected by the severe weather, the Louisiana Department of Insurance has some guidance on what you can do in regards to filing a claim for property damage.

The first thing that LDI suggests you do is get in touch with “your insurance company or agent and file a claim.”

They have five other tips including documenting the damage done to your property before the cleaning process begins. That includes taking pictures and video, LDI said.

They also suggested making “temporary repairs to protect your property from additional damage.” That can mean putting a tarp on the roof of your home or covering windows that are broken.

Do not let you guard down, LDI said to be on the alert for scammers.

When an adjuster shows up at your home, make sure to inquire about identification. If you have any questions, you can verify their licensure online or by calling LDI at 1-800-259-5300.

Lastly, LDI is a resource for you. Amongst other things, you can file a complaint with them and get answers to questions you may have about your policy.

“My prayers are with those lost and their loved ones following the storm yesterday evening,” said Insurance Commissioner Tim Temple. “I urge anyone who experienced property damage to contact their insurer and file a claim as soon as possible.”
