Louisiana congressional candidate to file request to US Supreme Court over map

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — U.S. Congressional candidate Quentin Anderson, of Baton Rouge, plans to file an amicus brief with the U.S. Supreme Court over the new map created for Louisiana’s 6th District.

“Our argument is really simple, straightforward, and nonpartisan: a stable, predictable calendar is vital for grassroots candidates vying for federal office. Making any adjustments — let alone wholesale changes — to the map this late in an election year effectively tips ALL of the congressional races in favor of either incumbents, the ultra-wealthy, or celebrities. It perverts our democracy and makes federal office unattainable for grassroots candidates, regardless of party” Anderson said in a statement to BRProud.

A three-judge panel in federal court threw out the newest map adopted by the Louisiana Legislature earlier this year. A different federal court previously required the state to create a second majority-Black district to meet federal guidelines set in the Equal Protection Clause.

The panel said the map can’t be used because race was a driving factor in developing the map, which created a sixth district that stretches diagonally from Shreveport to Baton Rouge.

Attorney General Liz Murrill has already filed a request to the nation’s highest court to reject a lower court’s ruling that gives state lawmakers until June 3 to create a new map, which would create a second majority-Black district. Murrill said the deadline should be May 15, since qualifying for the election is in July.

“I think this whole process has been disappointing and exhausting for everyone — voters, candidates, the media, and our judicial system. I think the lack of clarity and certainty around the map has confused voters and a further indictment of the generational incompetence of our legislature and our state elected officials,” Anderson said.
