Loudoun County propane company restricted as Sterling house explosion investigation continues

LOUDOUN COUNTY, Va. (DC News Now) — Loudoun County fire officials restricted a petroleum company’s delivery and transfers as investigations into a Sterling home explosion continue.

On Tuesday, the Loudoun County Fire and Rescue Fire Marshal’s Office (LCFR-FMO) said that it was working with representatives from Southern States Cooperative, Inc. to “review and update the company’s fire code related information.”

LCFR-FMO’s investigation had previously revealed that a 500-gallon underground propane tank caused a house in Sterling to explode on Feb. 16, killing Trevor Brown with the Sterling Volunteer Fire Company and injuring many others.

Officials said the propane had “leaked into and around the structure and was ignited by a still unknown ignition source.”

LCFR-FMO said in an update that the Fire Marshal had restricted branches of Southern States that operate in Loudoun County and all incorporated towns until the company completes its fire code updates.

Officials said that residents “may experience interruptions to their normal propane service delivery” until the updates are complete.
