The Lotterys Plus One: Read the first chapter of Emma Donoghue's children's book - exclusive

Room author Emma Donoghue's first children's book, The Lotterys Plus One, will be published in March, and EW is excited to exclusively reveal the cover and first chapter now.

Scholastic acquired the book last year, and The Lotterys Plus One will be published simultaneously in the U.S. and Canada by Arthur A. Levine Books/Scholastic and HarperCollins, respectively.

The Lotterys Plus One is a middle grade novel about nine-year-old Sumac Lottery, a girl with six siblings, both biological and adopted, two moms, two dads, and many pets. Her giant family lives in a huge Victorian house they call Camelottery. Things get shaken up when Sumac's racist and homophobic grandfather moves in because of his dementia. The book is a funny and touching exploration of family. Donoghue has previously written fiction for adults and young adults. The Lotterys Plus One is illustrated by debut artist Caroline Hadilaksono.
