Lottery player wins big Powerball prize — but just misses hitting $262 million jackpot

A lucky lottery player scored a huge Powerball prize but they were one number short from winning the $262 million jackpot.

The player bought a ticket from a Vons grocery store in Bonita, California, for the May 31 drawing, the California Lottery said in a news release.

They matched the five white ball numbers 2, 4, 54, 61, 62, but missed the red Powerball 14.

But the player will walk away with the $1,036,009 prize before taxes, lottery officials said.

The jackpot has grown to $262 million in over a month since it started at $20 million, lottery officials said.

The odds of scoring the jackpot prize are 1 in 292.2 million.

Powerball is played in 45 states; Washington, D.C.; Puerto Rico; and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Tickets can be bought on the day of the drawing, but sales times vary by state.

Drawings are broadcast Saturdays, Mondays and Wednesdays at 10:59 p.m. ET and can be streamed online.

Bonita is about 10 miles southeast of San Diego.
