Lost dog rescued after falling into filthy hole in Ogden warehouse

WEBER COUNTY, Utah (ABC4) — Animal control officers rescued a lost dog that fell into a roughly 10-foot deep hole in an old warehouse in Ogden over the weekend.

Weber County Animal Control Officer Rachel Toone said the rescue happened Monday inside an old warehouse on 24th Street. Employees in the building said they heard an animal crying in part of the building that was no longer in use and without power.

“We had to go in with flashlights, watching our footing,” Toone told ABC4 on Tuesday, describing the rescue.

The hole was full of garbage and roughly a foot of filthy water. The dog was sitting on a platform, shivering and unable to walk. The animal might have been stuck in the hole for days.

“She was exhausted, trying to stay out of the cold water,” Toone said.

One animal control officer descended a ladder into the hole while others hoisted the roughly 120-pound dog out of the fetid space. Due to the dog’s size, several officers were needed to lift the animal.

While the officers didn’t see any visible wounds on the dog, they brought her to a Salt Lake City veterinary clinic, where she received care. The veterinarians said the dog was feverish and suffered minor scrapes, but no broken bones.

Because the dog had a microchip, animal service officials were able to contact the dog’s owner. The Ogden man told officials that he’d been searching for his dog since Friday.

It’s unclear when the dog fell into the hole, but animal services officials estimated it was either Friday night or Saturday.
