Los Angeles Rams' strange uniform combination, explained

The Los Angeles Rams are in the midst of a franchise overhaul, from residency to stadium to coaching staff to uniforms. And sometimes, projects in mid-rebuild are a mess.

Case in point: the Rams’ uniform on Sunday vs. the Dallas Cowboys, white horns and gold-trimmed jerseys, which looks a lot like the kind of mismatched mess you pull out of the closet when it’s laundry day.

For reference, here’s what the white-horned helmets look like with a better-matched uniform:

Rams officials have indicated that this isn’t a permanent look, really; they’re just trying out some new approaches: “The team is currently exploring a full rebrand, including new uniforms that will be unveiled in 2019 to coincide with the opening of the new LA Stadium and Entertainment District at Hollywood Park [scheduled for 2020],” the team said in a statement.

NFL rules prohibit a team from changing its uniform entirely more than once in a five-year period. With the complete overhaul planned for a couple years down the road, open the team has to take incremental steps right now … ugly though they may be.
