Look Back ... to Sears making it official, a new Anniston store should open in 1950

Mar. 4—March 4, 1949, in The Star: Plans to construct in Anniston one of the most modern stores in the merchandising field were announced today by a Sears & Roebuck regional company attorney in Atlanta. The L-shaped store will, as was hinted yesterday, be built on a lot on the west side of Noble Street in the 1700 block. Demolition of existing structures there will be rushed, with the hope being that the store will be ready to occupy in the spring of 1950, next year. Sears is in Anniston now, but in a building completely inadequate to its needs. Also this date: Construction on the education building of First Presbyterian Church was completed this week. The $16,000 renovation encompasses a remodeled classroom spaces for women and children, and on the main floor, where the fellowship hall is, stained glass windows that were originally in the sanctuary have been installed. March 4, 1999, in The Star: A lightning strike exposed the unfinished 1 percent of Calhoun County's new 800 megahertz radio system when a direct hit cause a near-system failure of the emergency radios yesterday. An exposed microwave transmission tower high atop Chimney Peak was apparently hit with a bolt of lightning during the early morning storm. No equipment was permanently disabled.
