Look Back ... to Alexandrians' trip to Washington D.C., 1949

Apr. 3—April 3, 1949, in The Star: The largest collection of fine prizes ever assembled for a cooking school has been donated by participating Anniston merchants in The Anniston Star's four-day cooking school that opens in two days at the Ritz Theater. With a $300 Magic Chef gas stove donated by General Appliance Co. leading the list, 30 other local firms are contributing to make the 1949 cooking school one of the greatest ever held in Anniston. Daily door prizes will be awarded the school's instructor, Miss Anna Bines, will give away roasts, steaks and other foods she prepares daily on the Ritz stage. Also this date: Seniors of Alexandria High School described their recent visit to the nation's capital as the "highlight" of their school career. Stirring music by the Alexandria band marked their departure from Alexandria March 22 via the L&N Railway for Wellington, where they boarded the Seaboard's Silver Comet. Many of the students enjoyed their first-ever meal aboard a modern "Streamline" train, they revealed.

April 3, 1999, in The Star: Almost 400 students in fourth, fifth and sixth grades from 19 area schools met recently at Jacksonville High School to push their scientific envelopes in the seventh annual Elementary Science Olympiad. Hometown host Kitty Stone Elementary School walked away with first-place honors, followed by Donoho, then Oxford, White Plains and Wellborn.
