Longwood Gardens set to reopen after manhunt for murderer shifts from area

Longwood Gardens plans to reopen to the public this week as a manhunt for an escaped prisoner has shifted past an area that included the horticultural attraction.

Visitors will be allowed beginning at 10 a.m. Wednesday, a post on Longwood's Facebook page Sunday evening said. "These past few days have reminded us of the important role Longwood plays in our community as a place for respite, and we look forward to welcoming you back to the beauty of our Gardens," the post read.

The decision followed Pennsylvania State Police's announcement earlier in the day that Danelo Cavalcante slipped through the search perimeter, changed his appearance, was sited in Phoenixville and then abandoned a stolen white van in East Nantmeal Township. He remains at-large.

Cavalcante, 34, escaped from Chester County Prison on Aug. 31. He was awaiting transfer to a state maximum security site following his conviction for the 2021 murder of his girlfriend, 34-year-old Deborah Brandao. The killing happened in front of Brandao's 7-year-old daughter and 3-year-old son.

Longwood Gardens is in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, about five miles from the prison and near the border of Delaware. The attraction closed Thursday as the manhunt intensified with sightings of Cavalcante on trail cameras.
