Fans of sushi and other Asian dishes have until Sunday to down their last Crouching Tiger roll or bowl of char siu pork ramen at the original Wasabi Chi. The restaurant near Merle Hay Mall closes after service on Sunday.

On Thursday, the restaurant posted on Facebook that the location, which originally opened in 2011, closes after 13 years in business.

“It is with heavy hearts that we must announce the permanent closure of our location effective May 13, 2024. Our beloved store, nestled in this community for years, has faced challenges due to the aging building infrastructure beyond our control.

“Though we don't want to bid farewell to this location, we must prioritize your safety and convenience. Don't worry, our other nearby locations in Johnston and Urbandale warmly awaits your visit, ensuring the same quality service and products you've come to love.”

Aside from a roster of nigiri, sashimi and rolls, Wasabi Chi offers teriyaki, ramen and yakisoba dishes as well as Asian-inspired items such as fried rice, lo mein, pad Thai and Mongolian beef. The restaurant's signature drink, the Des Moines Love, features a refreshing mix of Pearl cucumber vodka, St. Germaine elderflower liqueur, lime juice and pineapple juice.

The Wasabi family of restaurants includes locations in Urbandale, Ankeny in the District at Prairie Trail, Johnston (which recently moved), Waukee (technically in West Des Moines), and two locations in Ames. It appears the restaurant plans to open a second location in Ankeny near the new Costco Wholesale and another in West Des Moines near the IHOP on 50th Street and Mills Civic Parkway.
