Longtime director of Jackson High School's Purple Army band to retire

ACTION: Accepted a retirement notice from longtime band director Michele Monigold.

DISCUSSION: Monigold has been the director of the high school band program since 2012-2013 school year. Before becoming the director, she was the assistant director starting in 1995.

Under her direction, the band has performed around the world, traveling to play at places such as Florida, Hawaii, Ireland and China.

While Monigold did not attend the regular meeting, Superintendent Christopher DiLoreto commented,She has always been passionate when working with the instrumental program and student focused.

“We have been blessed to have her work in Jackson Local Schools. She will be missed. It was my pleasure and honor to have worked with Michele.”

Monigold was named the State Board of Education District 8 Teacher of the year. She was also the finalist Art & Music Educator of the Year named by the Canton Symphony Orchestra, Canton Museum of Art and the Massillon Museum.

OTHER ACTION:

  • Approved filing land valuation complaints against multiple properties in the township.

  • Approved the settlement of a recent lawsuit brought by Brian Ames from Open Government Advocates over public records from the district. The organization cited several clerical errors and that the district did not properly publish special meeting dates and times as required under Ohio records laws. The district has corrected all the items mentioned by the group as part of the settlement.
