AUSTIN (KXAN) – Texas football has been very active in the transfer portal bringing in some of the top available talent to Austin. That momentum continued Tuesday with the addition of Tiaoalii Savea.

Savea comes to Texas after two years with Arizona football. With the Wildcats, the standout defensive tackle tallied 36 tackles. Before that, Savea spent one year at UCLA where he notched seven tackles as a freshman.

The defensive line room will feature a lot of new for the Longhorns who are losing T’Vondre Sweat and Byron Murphy. Sweat was the 2023 Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year while Murphy was the conference Defensive Lineman of the Year. Both Sweat and Murphy declared for the 2024 NFL Draft.

Texas does have some returners expected to step up on the defensive front with Alfred Collins and Vernon Broughton expected to lead the way.

Savea, who joins Texas from an Arizona team that won 10 games last season, joins Johnny Nansen in making the trek from Tucson to Austin. Nansen, the Co-Defensive Coordinator and Linebackers Coach for Texas, was also at UCLA with Savea before his two-year stint with the Wildcats.

Fans will get their first chance to see Savea and the rest of the 2024 Longhorns on April 20 at the Orange-White Spring Game.
