Longest-serving sheriff in Stanly County dies at 91

The longest-serving sheriff in Stanly County died Friday at his home. Ralph Lee McSwain, of Norwood, was 91.

The U.S. Army Reserves veteran was the Stanly County sheriff for 28 years, according to his obituary published on the Stanly Funeral & Cremation Care website.

“It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Sheriff Ralph Lee McSwain,” a Stanly County Sheriff Facebook post read. “Sheriff McSwain was known by many, not only in Stanly County but across this state. Sheriff McSwain will be missed but will always remain in our hearts as our sheriff.”

The memorial service will be at 3 p.m. and will be held at Green Memorial United Methodist Church.

Burial with honors will be after the service.

McSwain’s urn will lie in state at the Sally Port at 223 S. Third St. at the Stanly County Ralph L. McSwain Detention Center from noon until 2 p.m. prior to the service.

“He loved woodworking and was a master craftsman and licensed contractor,” his obituary read.
