Long traffic delays after injured woman airlifted

A woman has reportedly fallen out of a vehicle on the A5 in Shropshire, leading to long delays.

Traffic has been held up between the Preston roundabout and junction seven of the M54 for Wellington, after emergency services were called at about 09:30 BST.

A female patient was airlifted to Royal Stoke University Hospital in a critical condition.

The eastbound carriageway remained closed on the stretch before 14:00 BST and was expected to remain shut for the next few hours, but the M54 and A5 have reopened westbound.

West Midlands Ambulance Service said the woman had suffered multiple serious injuries and its crews and Midlands Air Ambulance performed specialist trauma care.
