Long-term COVID-19 trends dip to October levels as regional cases continue decrease

Jun. 9—With nearly half of its population fully vaccinated, Northeast Pennsylvania continued to ride a downward trend of new COVID-19 infections with 23 additional cases reported Wednesday, according to new state Department of Health data.

The seven-county region added 563 new cases of COVID-19 in the last two weeks. That figure has gradually decreased for weeks and is the lowest since the beginning of October, health department data shows. By comparison, the two-week total peaked in December with more than 8,000 regional cases recorded over a span of 14 days.

Meanwhile, Lackawanna County recorded three additional cases — the sixth day in a row it saw less than 10.

The regional case total now stands at 77,941. With three new deaths added to the total, the region's death toll stands at 1,870.

Statewide, the health department reported another 496 new cases Wednesday, bringing the total to 1,206,935. With 22 new deaths, Pennsylvania's death toll is 27,417.

In local counties:

Lackawanna added three cases for 18,480 total, including 2,896 probable. One new death raised the total to 478.

Luzerne added nine cases for 31,942 total, including 2,598 probable. Two new deaths raised the total to 819.

Monroe added 18 cases for 14,749 total, including 461 probable. Deaths remained at 321.

Pike added two cases for 4,011 total, including 432 probable. Deaths remained at 54.

Susquehanna added two cases for 2,651 total, including 349 probable. The death count decreased by one to 62.

Wayne remained at 4,122 cases total, including 436 probable. One new death raised the total to 82.

Wyoming added one new case for 1,986 total, including 353 probable. Deaths remained at 54.
