In July 2023, police arrested a man named Rex Heuermann in connection with a series of murders in Long Island, New York. He is suspected of being the infamous Long Island Serial Killer who murdered 11 individuals. Although the Gilgo Beach serial killings began 28 years ago, they came under the limelight in 2010.

Recently, authorities arrived at Rex Heuermann’s house to collect evidence. According to TIME Magazine, they used their cars, set up barriers to separate the area, and hoisted white tents in front of his house. Forensic and crime lab units were present at the location throughout the day, and investigators found bags and boxes that counted as evidence. Additionally, Suffolk County medical examiner officials were also present at the scene. Heuermann’s family house is located in Massapequa Park on Long Island, New York.

Moreover, Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney’s office did not comment on the whole ordeal after being questioned by New York State Police and Suffolk County Police. Meanwhile, Tania Lopez, Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney’s office’s spokesperson, released a statement that read, “As District Attorney Tierney has previously stated, the work of the Gilgo Beach Homicide Task force is continuing. We do not comment on investigative steps while ongoing.”

Heuermann’s lawyers and family received several calls and emails for comments, but they didn’t respond. TIME Magazine also noted that the suspect’s wife and two daughters weren’t at home when officials collected evidence. Earlier, police searched his residence for nearly two weeks following his arrest in July 2023.

What are the charges against Rex Heuermann?

Per People Magazine, Rex Heuermann has been charged with first and second-degree murders of Amber Costello, 27, Melissa Barthelemy, 24, Megan Waterman, 22, and Maureen Brainard-Barnes, 25. Following his arrest last year, the in-custody suspect has maintained his innocence.

According to CNN, a friend of Brainard-Barnes reported her missing to the Norwich Police Department on July 14, 2007. The last person she spoke to was a friend from Connecticut. Two years later, the night before Barthelemy’s disappearance on July 12, 2009, she told her friend that she was en route to meet a man. However, she added that she would return in the morning. Waterman, a Maine resident, was last seen alive by her family on June 6, 2010. Costello was a sex worker who was addicted to heroin. She was last seen on September 2 of the same year.

As for Heuermann, CBS News reported that he worked as an architect. He also founded the New York City firm RH Consultants and Associates in 1994. This company’s website states that its clientele has high-profile names such as Foot Locker, American Airlines, Catholic Charities, and Target.

Furthermore, they have described the accused as a provider of services to builders, developers, and more. Per CBS News, the website states, “Throughout the years, Rex Heuermann has provided services to other city agencies, not for profit agencies, builders, developers and individual owners of buildings in regard to ADA, NYC and NY State Codes as well as Zoning Consultation.”

Netflix is currently working on an untitled documentary that will delve deep into the Gilgo Beach serial killings. This project’s director is Liz Garbus, and its release date has not yet been announced.
