Long Island Couple Weds in Supermarket for Their Own 'Royal Wedding'
Just hours before Meghan Markle and Prince Harry said their “I dos” at Windsor Castle this past weekend, a different kind of royal wedding — complete with royal trumpeters and Renaissance costumes — happened at a Stew Leonard’s in Long Island, N.Y.
Hempstead locals Rudy and Nadine Michaud said their vows in front of a town clerk Friday afternoon, not long before the Duke and Duchess of Sussex did the same Saturday afternoon across the Atlantic.
Store staff donned velvet medieval garments as they cheered on the couple during the public ceremony with a royal fanfare of trumpets playing in the background.
“My dad started this store back in 1969 and I can tell you this is the first royal wedding we’ve ever had in Stew Leonard’s, but we’re excited,” said baker Beth Leonard Hollis.
To celebrate the big day, Leonard Hollis baked several sample sizes of Michaud’s wedding cake, following along with that of Meghan and Harry’s royal wedding cake — with lemon and elderflowers.
“We baked the exact same cake that they're having over in England for the royal wedding,” Leonard Hollis said.
