Loney goes to Rays

First baseman James Loney agreed to a new three-year, $21 million contract with the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday, CBSSports.com reported.

The deal includes a $5 million signing bonus.

The Pittsburgh Pirates and Milwaukee Brewers also expressed interest in Loney.

The 29-year-old Loney batted .299 with 13 home runs and 75 RBIs in 158 games for the Rays last season. His .351 road batting average led the major leagues.

Loney played seven seasons for the Los Angeles Dodgers before he went to the Boston Red Sox in August 2012 as part of the trade for Carl Crawford and Adrian Gonzalez.
