Lone Elk Park welcomes first calves of the year
ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. – Two baby calves have entered the world at Lone Elk Park this week.
Elk and bison calves were born Tuesday, according to St. Louis County. Last year, the park welcomed five elk calves and three bison calves.
The news comes right after the start of calving season, which typically runs from mid-May to June, according to St. Louis County.

Elk and bison are just two of many animals that can be seen at Lone Elk Park. Throughout the 546 acres, visitors may also see wild turkeys, waterfowl, and deer.
“These are very large animals, about 800 to 1,000 pounds,” Brian Schaffer, director of the Parks and Recreation Department, said in a release. “Mothers are very protective and will defend their babies. You might not know you’re near a calf because the mother hides them in the woods, so please be sure to give them plenty of space.”
The park in Valley Park is open to visitors daily from 8 a.m. to sunset.
