Logansport School Corp. approves superintendent raise, announces grant

Mar. 15—The Logansport Community School Corporation held its monthly school board meeting Monday night and approved a pay increase for Superintendent Michele Starkey.

The pay increase will make for a base salary of $146,537 for Starkey. This is the sixth addendum to her contract, which runs through June 30, 2024.

The school corporation was awarded a $75,000 STEM (Science Technology Engineering Math) Acceleration Grant from the Indiana Department of Education. The grant will go toward creating a STEM Room with a STEM elective that would can be taken as a class similar to a physical education or art elective. Additional funds will be used to enhance STEM opportunities for the elementary and junior high school.

The board also approved the Roeing Corporation as a vendor to update the network infrastructure for Logansport Junior High School and the Columbia Sixth Grade Academy. It also approved Qubits as the vendor for the school's Extreme Network hardware and support for the new Logansport Intermediate School.

The board meeting opened with the recognition of the Columbia Elementary School science club, who recently finished third in the science state competition. Fourth grade teacher Kylie Schmaltz was named Applebee's teacher of the month.

Columbia principal Kelly Pierson also gave a presentation on the role of diversity at the elementary school. Pierson said that 77 of her students were born outside of the United States and there are also seven different languages spoken at the school.

The next LCSC board meeting will be at 5 p.m. April 11 in the administration building.
