FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) — Germany coach Joachim Loew has pulled a surprise by calling up four newcomers for the friendly against Chile next week.
Several Germany stars are injured and Loew appears to be looking for new options should one or more of them be unable to recover in time for the World Cup in Brazil.
Bastian Schweinsteiger, Miroslav Klose, Kevin Grosskreutz and Lukas Podolski return after their injuries.
The four newcomers include Sampdoria defender Shkodran Mustafi, who plays in the Serie A and has a low profile in Germany.
The other three are Matthias Ginter of Freiburg, Pierre-Michel Lasogga of Hamburger SV, and Andre Hahn of Augsburg.
Germany plays Chile in Stuttgart on Wednesday.
