AKRON, Ohio (WJW) — It was just before midnight on New Years Eve, when then 17-year-old Cameron Jones, shot and killed 35-year-old Damarcus Hartwell after Jones and three other teens devised “a plot to rob Mr. Hartwell,” prosecutors said.

On Monday, Summit County Common Pleas Court Judge Joy Oldfield sentenced Jones to life in prison.

Jones, who is now 18-years-old, was tried as an adult for murdering Hartwell.

“The actions of these four young men are horrifying,” said Summit County Prosecutor Elliot Kolkovich. “Mr. Hartwell welcomed them into his home for a New Year’s Eve party. A plot to rob Mr. Hartwell ended with Cameron Jones shooting and killing him. Summit County is safer with Mr. Jones locked away for a long time,” said Kolkovich.

2 indicted in fire set while family slept inside their Edgewater home.

Jones will be eligible for parole after serving 21 years in prison.
