WESTLAKE, Ohio (WJW) — Westlake police tracked down a suspect in an unusual way, they said.

Police said a man broke into cars and stole numerous valuables including a wallet, laptop, cash, a garage door opener, gift cards and credit cards, then bought merchandise with the stolen cards at a local shopping center.

Police Capt. Gerald Vogel said the suspect took the items from vehicles on Creekside Drive in Westlake on the night of Feb. 22, and that the case was cracked this week.

Police obtained video of the suspect on Creekside Drive from the night of the thefts and then got video from a store at Steelyard Commons in Cleveland the next day, where the suspect bought merchandise with the stolen cards, Vogel said.

But where was the suspect? The answer came two days ago on Wednesday, March 6.

“The victim of one of the thefts … noticed that his stolen AirPods were turned on in the area of a homeless shelter on Lakeside Boulevard in Cleveland, where detectives and officers watched the area and saw the same male suspect,” Vogel said.

The 34-year-old suspect was charged with felony theft, he added.
