Local organizations working together to bring Hometown Hero banners to Danville

Apr. 21—DANVILLE — Several Danville area businesses have teamed up to pay tribute to local veterans and those actively serving by bringing Hometown Hero banners to the borough.

Those leading the initiative said they have seen the banners in other municipalities across the Valley for years and decided it was time to bring them to Danville.

Bringing the banners to Danville has been a long process, and a combined community effort, according to Annie Yeigle, of Moose Lodge 1133.

Yiegle said local businesses have jumped on board with the idea. Those involved so far include the Washington Hose Company, Friendship Fire Company, Continental Fire Company, East End Fire Company, Robert K Vogt VFW Post 298, American Legion Post 40, Danville Borough Police Department, Moose Lodge 1133, the Masons and more.

"We are all coming together to bring this to our town and salute our local vets," Yeigle said.

The business' support will go toward purchasing brackets to be places on poles in the borough where the banners will hang, Renee Benza said.

"It gives me goosebumps," Benza said. "We have had overwhelming support."

The group has been given permission to hang banners on 24 poles from Dunkin' on Walnut Street to Ferry Street, according to Yiegle.

The goal is to expand the project further and eventually have banners on Mill Strret and other locations throughout the borough, Benza said.

Applications for banners will be available at any of the businesses involved beginning on May 1. Families will be responsible for the purchase of the banner itself and the organization will verify the veteran or active duty service, according to Benza.

The banners will hang throughout the warmer weather months, hopefully from May to November, Benza said, before they are taken done and returned to the purchasing families.
