Local nonprofit recognized as ‘Hometown Health Hero’
LANSING — A local nonprofit was recently named a Hometown Health Hero for its role promoting health in the community.
The Momentum Center was one of nine recipients of the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services' 2024 Hometown Health Heroes Awards. Honorees are selected for “working tirelessly to maintain and improve the health of their local communities.”
“Our Hometown Health Hero Awards are a way for us to highlight selfless and dedicated champions of public health who are making incredible efforts to improve the lives of Michigan residents,” MDHHS Director Elizabeth Hertel wrote in a release.
“We celebrate all efforts, no matter how small or large, of healthcare professionals and advocates who make a positive impact on the well-being of our state.”
With locations in Grand Haven and Holland, the Momentum Center provides space for social and recreational activities for youth over age 11 and adults with mental illness, addiction and disabilities.
Members gather for events, classes, meals, activities and interaction “without stigma or stereotype.”
Barbara Lee VanHorssen, director of the Momentum Center, accepted the award in Lansing on Wednesday, April 10. VanHorssen was also nominated for the award as an individual.

The Momentum Center was nominated by Grand Haven resident Cindy Anderson.
The Ottawa County Migrant Health Task Force received an honorable mention.
