Local NC grocer Carlie C’s IGA is closing a location in the Triangle. Here’s what we know

Carlie C’s IGA, a locally owned grocery store chain with over 30 locations across the Carolinas, will soon close its Garner location.

The closing process began Thursday, April 18, when leadership told employees about the closure, marketing director Malia Allen told The News & Observer.

“We were able to place all of our full-time employees, or at least able to offer them other positions within the company, and retain as many part-time employees as we could. That’s the most important part of this process to Carlie C’s, making sure all of our employees are well taken care of,” Allen said.

When will the Garner Carlie C’s location close?

The location will begin to shut down “immediately,” Allen said.

Staff will begin moving out inventory and discounting groceries Monday, April 22.

There is not a set date to officially close the store. That will depend on how quickly groceries and inventory sell.

Which Carlie C’s locations have closed/opened recently?

The Garner location closure comes just a few months after the location on College Street in Clinton shut down.

Both stores had similar reasons for closing their doors, as both buildings were rented and not owned, Allen said. The Clinton location had another storefront nearby, but this will look different for the Garner location. The closest Carlie C’s storefront is on Raleigh’s New Bern Avenue, about 10 miles away.

Carlie C’s would not offer information on other locations opening or closing in the future. But the two closures aren’t representative of a larger pattern, Allen said, as eight locations have opened within the past three years.

“Our main motive is to make sure people have access to groceries,” Allen said.

Without the Garner location, there are five Carlie C’s storefronts across the Triangle: Raleigh, Durham, Zebulon, Smithfield and Benson.

Customers respond to Carlie C’s Garner closing

One customer commented on a post in the Garner Biz Facebook page about the rising cost of living in the area.

“This is bad news! They had the best meat prices in my general area and although it didn’t have a very sterile shopping environment, the customer service was good and it had hard to find brands that the chain supermarkets didn’t carry,” the commenter wrote. “Development and the growing cost of living Wake County has claimed another casualty.”

Another customer mentioned higher living costs.

“I bet the owner of the shopping center raised the rent. That’s what’s happening everywhere. The Carlie C’s is plenty busy every time I go in there, so I doubt it’s because of low volume,” the commenter wrote.
